Watermill wheel

in the Educational Water Park HYDROFUN

Watermill wheel (also called a water wheel) is one of the oldest, known since the 3rd century BC, machines that use forces of nature. Because of its simplicity it was in use even in the past century.

How does the watermill wheel work?

The device works by using the energy generated by a flow or a drop height of water, converting it into a kinetic energy of rotary motion. In the Educational Water Park HYDROFUN the potential energy of water is a result of the difference in water levels between inlet and outlet channels. The watermill wheel consists of a large water wheel with a number of blades that create driving surfaces. Flowing jet of water strikes blades that move a mounted wheel.

Historically, water wheel has been used to distribute water and for irrigation purposes, gradually it has been used to mill grain for flour and semolina, to blast furnace bellows, provide power for trip hammers or heavy saws in sawmills. In the Educational Water Park HYDROFUN it is installed in the specifically designed place, alongside an open channel or directly by one of water sources. While arranging the facility it is necessary to plan enough space for the device, so it can be operated.

How the watermill wheel is installed?

Assembling the device alongside a channel requires maintaining a proper drop height on both sides of the wheel, which will force water flow. Watermill wheel’s shaft support is placed on a side of the outlet channel, leaving space for water to reach blades of the wheel.

Watermill wheel placed directly by one of water sources is installed on sides of the outlet channel, on a prepared foundation adjusted to the size of the device. Water from the inlet need to flow directly on blades of the wheel.

The wheel is made of a high quality stainless steel, and the most common finishing materials are, depending on client’s preferences, wood, HDPE sheet, polyurea coating, waterproof plywood or plastic.
